Latina Nursing Students Scholarship Opportunity

American Heart Association offers scholarships to Latinas

Go Red Por Tu Corazón and Macy’s Join Forces to Drive Diversity in Medicine

During Hispanic Heritage Month, the American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón movement and its national sponsor, Macy’s, are launching the Go Red™ Multicultural Scholarship Fund nationally. The scholarship directly addresses important gaps in treatment that can lead to heart health disparities among Hispanic women.

The scholarship program places medical and nursing school within the reach of deserving racial and ethnic female candidates and increases cultural competence in the healthcare workforce. This year, the Go Red™ Multicultural Scholarship Fund will award 16 scholarships of $2,500 each ($40,000 total) to qualifying applicants.

Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of Hispanic women. Additionally, Latinas are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than non-Hispanic white women, confront barriers to diagnosis and care, receive lower quality treatment and experience worse health outcomes than their Caucasian counterparts.

“Ethnically diverse women are needed in the healthcare field. They can have a very positive impact on the delivery of health care services to diverse populations because they understand their communities and they know how to provide care that is meaningful, appropriate and sensitive to their needs.” said Eva Gómez R.N., Go Red Por Tu Corazón spokesperson and Staff Development Specialist in the Department of Nursing at Children’s Hospital Boston.

Last year, only 6.7 percent of African-Americans and 7.5 percent of Hispanics made up the total number of medical school graduates, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

“Being a Latina in the healthcare field, and a heart disease survivor, has enabled me to make recommendations for changes that addressed the needs of the Spanish-speaking community in a variety of ways. I became the voice for my patients in places where their voice would have never been heard,” said Gómez, current Vice President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

“Macy’s is proud to have helped launch the Go Red Multicultural Scholarship Fund to encourage students nationwide to explore career opportunities that make a direct impact in their communities by joining the fight against heart disease in Latinas.” said Bill Hawthorne, Macy’s Senior Vice President of Diversity Strategies.

Furthermore, data from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) suggests that the United States faces an overall shortage of physicians, and the most pressing need is for minority doctors. By 2050, racial and ethnic minorities are expected to make up half the U.S. population. Today one in four Americans is Hispanic, black or Native American, but only one in 16 are practicing doctors, AAMC says.

The Go Red™ Multicultural Scholarship is made possible by the Macy’s Multicultural Fund. Macy’s is a national sponsor of Go Red For Women and Go Red Por Tu Corazón and has helped raise more than $24 million for the cause since 2004. Scholarship applicant requirements:

  • Female of Hispanic, African-American, Asian/Pacific Islander or American Indian/Alaskan Native heritage
  • A U.S. citizen/permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Attending an accredited college or university in the U.S.
  • Currently in your freshman or sophomore year
  • Pursuing a career in healthcare (nursing, biology, etc.)
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

La Feria De Los Moles: Mole Festival

One of my all time favorite dishes that I would love to learn how to cook from scratch is mole. The ingredient list seems endless with a variety of spices, chiles, chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, and so on. Not all moles are the same- they are several types from Puebla and Oaxaca that use different spices and chiles. Oaxaca is a state where the most variety of moles exist, counting seven main versions of the Republic of Mexico: Negro (black), rojo (red), coloradito (colored), mancha manteles (table cloth staining), verde (green), amarillo (yellow) and chichilo. My favorite type is the mole poblano which orginates from Puebla, Mexico. Although my family has never spent the many hours that it takes to make it, they would often brew up the spicy thick sauce from a jar. (I think I just heard a gasp from across the blogosphere.)

Recently, I was invited to a special mole presentation and tasting preview of La Feria De Los Moles. We were served hot steamy mole poblano with chicken, rice, beans, and tortillas. It was so delicious that I had to resist the urge to lick my plate! We also had a chance to taste the Oaxacaño mole which had a dark smoky flavory to it. It was served with a flavorful white rice. I think it’s tasty goodness came from garlic.

This Sunday, October 09 at Olvera Street in Los Angeles, California you can taste various moles at La Feria De Los Moles. It’s an all day event, so bring the family for some good eats and a taste of history! There will be an array of over 13 different Mexican Moles to choose from ranging from sweet and savory to hot and spicy, will provide the opportunity to taste the best of the best in mole between the state of Puebla and Oaxaca.

An Afternoon On The Set of Family Game Night

A few weeks ago I was invited to the studio of the Hub Network in Hollywood for a sneak preview of their game show, Family Game Night. My youngest joined me on this day and we were given a tour of the set just before watching a taping of  one their shows. As we walked on the set we were amused with all of the life sized family board game pieces that they use. If you haven’t watched this game show, families compete against each other for cash and prizes through a series of games based on Hasbro board games such as Connect Four, Bop It, and Yahtzee. The families that were competing on this day looked like they were having so much fun, that we wanted to go up and try it out for ourselves.

Just before we went on the set to watch the taping, we had an opportunity to listen to Todd Newton, Host and Burton Richardson, Voice Announcer speak about their personal experience working with the Family Game Night game show. Burton voice swept us moms away! Someone asked if he gets request for recording people’s personal voice mail message for their cell phones. :D Can you imagine? LOL! It wasn’t the first time he’s been asked that, so he cleverly left the room before anyone had a chance to give him extra work.

Todd charmed us with his stories about the families that come to compete on the show, the joy of having a family win big, his favorite game- Bop It, and working on the wonder like set that is the Family Game Night. Since I have older kids I had to ask if they would ever produce shows with tweens and teens. They do have games that any aged person can enjoy, such as Boggle.

 

 

The producers told us about the families, games on the show, and the type of prizes that families win. I was surprised to learn that so many families travel many miles to audition and compete on their own dime. I suppose it’s their vacation time- they travel, spend time together, and put their hopes in a fun and entertaining game show. Whether they are chosen to compete and/or go all the way to a big win, these families return home with a unique experience.

Overall, we had a great time at the studio! Todd was generous with us in taking additional time to speak with us when he didn’t have to. Thank You!

Hosted by Daytime Emmy® nominee Todd Newton, the Hasbro Studios-produced series returns with all new challenges based on classic games such as “Simon” and “Trouble” added to gameplay, as well as brand new original challenges, in a larger-than-life environment that is bigger, better, and more exciting than ever.  Within each episode, two families compete head-to-head playing outrageous versions of the most beloved and iconic board games, challenging both contestants and viewers with strategy, creativity and pure luck for the chance to win cash, prizes and awesome family vacations.

Just three days after the premiere, The Hub will celebrate Labor Day and the second season launch with a special marathon of nine back-to-back, favorite episodes of “Family Game Night,” Monday, September 5 (10 a.m. -7 p.m. ET).

To usher in the new season of “Family Game Night,” on September 2, The Hub is hosting a sweepstakes during that day’s episodes (7 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET) and during the September 9 episode (7 p.m. ET.) George Lopez presents Rio DVD and Blu-Ray Release

For those of you who loved the movie Rio, the wait for the DVD/Blu-Ray release is almost over. On Tuesday, August 02 stores across the nation will be stocked with the colorful and heartwarming movie. Blu, (Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network) is a domesticated Spix Macaw living many miles away from his homeland, Brazil. When his human owner Linda (Leslie Mann, 17 Again) discovers that he is the last male of his kind, they head south to Rio de Janeiro to meet the only other female. However, it was far from love at first sight between the socially-awkward, flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries). Adventure strikes when two rare birds are captured by greedy animal smugglers and find themselves lost in the Brazilian rainforest. The birds along with Blu unexpentantly find themselves together which leads to the adventure of friendship, love, courage and spreading one’s wings to fly.

Just minutes before the presentation, we were visited by a Brazilian dancer. It was quite impressive to watch her dance from so high up without fumbling or worse falling. The special sneak peak of the release was presented by Fox and George Lopez. He spoke warmly about the movie and his work as one of the characters on the animated flick. It’s amazing how much time and talent it took to make the movie.
